Cheap controled strobe lights?

I’m trying to duplicate the effects of "Lightning strikes units" in a budget. If you don't know what that is cool. But if you have watched any David lynch films and the actor is bathed in a flashing strobey light that is controlled this is them. A simple strobe light pulses to fast and is no good. The before mentioned LS units cost way too much to rent for an artist of my paltry means. It’s a little off topic but I have seen some wacky stuff for cars perhaps that’s a way to go? Any help thanks

--Wondering if anyone found anything flashy and kewl. Here's a cc of what I found and posted on the Art Car tribe:

--Hiya gang! Probably in your local mall you've got something like Spencer Gifts; i.e. the joint that sells all the lava lights and the silly pull-my-finger farting Homer Simpson dolls and the like, yes? In the back they've got a section of "party" stuff; i.e. strobe lights, black lights, etc. Tonight, during the post Xmas sale I snagged a couple of 18" blacklight fixtures. They're AC but so what; one inverter later and you're running 'em off a car battery. They were incredibly cheap at $14.95 apiece and they also have a fairly substantial translucent green da-glo plastic enclosure for the guts, good enough to see any obvious problems. The housings also have enough empty space within for hacks you might want to add.
--I'm hoping to put one somewhere on "Short John Silver", maybe keeping the other as a spare if needed. Now I'm looking for ideas on what to illuminate with it.

--Have been perusing the Exploratorium newsletter; looks like December is about all things lighted and blinky! Here's a sampling of what they've got planned in the "Light Insight Series":
Saturday, Dec 10, 10:30AM-12:30PM:
EL Wire Workkshop: Adorn and Sculpt with Light
Sunday, Dec 11, 10:30AM-12:30PM:
Industrial Light: LED Workshop
--There are also a couple of other events on the following weekend; the biggie is Sunday, Dec 18: "Dress in Lights" and get half off admission if you're wearing "glowing accessories or outfits".

Taking neon to new hieghts and depths

I would love to collaborate with folks on neon projects for burning man
I had a wall of neon running over 100,000 volts with parts 20 ft high in 2004 at Camp doomtown (Jub Jub's Camp)
This year was a huge disappointment at Jub jub's plastique circus
My friends are cool but nothing got completed
I only go to be the most brightest installation in town
I live in Reno and have a shop in the old chicken coupe in my backyard so it is convenient to the playa
www.neonartnv.com
I made 20 neon cuthroat trout that swam up stream under the truckee river in 2001
A genuine original idea
It only worked with copper coil transformers
The solid state units wouldn't light the fish under water
I don't know why
When at first it didn't work I learned what it is like to be Evel kneivel in the bottom of the snake river

--Howdy all! Getting ready to attach my jutte cloth to a painted metal frame, then will attach EL wire-adorned armatures to this with zipties. Question: what's best to attach the jutte cloth to the painted metal? I'm liking silicone caulk, but all I seem to be able to find locally is "Silicone II" which is pretty dreadful stuff. Suggestions?

Borg2 "Meet The ARtists" -- Saturday Night

Don't forget ........

BORG2's "Meet The Artists" night is this Saturday, Aug 6, starting at 10 p.m. at Soluna Cafe & Lounge in S.F. ... All of the local Borg2-funded artists have agreed to attend and bring a special representation of their project (uhm, no fire in the restaurant, ok?). This is going to be a very special evening ....

A special reception in honor of our very own visionaries begins at 10 pm, with desserts, hot & cold hors d'oveours, and a change to meet and mingle ...

At 11 pm, we'll loosen up with bossa nova beats and other treats ...

Then at midnight, Ryel K. of Pink Mammoth fame takes the turntables so you can move your feet till 2 a.m. ....

Sugested donations are $10 - $40 ... but come out and tell us your sad story and see how cheap you can get in ...

TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW at www.borg2benefit.com

We're getting promises of good publicity from a bunch of community sources, and little hint of a buzz is developing ... But the restaurant has a finite capacity, and it would be whacked to turn away people who've been committed to this experiment all along ...

Glow Sticks 4 Poi?

Hi, I am looking for a resource where I can buy glow sticks to attach to my practice poi. I had an awesome pair of LED lights but since they are my practice poi, I managed to break one of them in a month. So, I am looking for the chemical variety that last ~ 8 hours. Any suggestions?

I've heard they are being discontinued, so I was pondering putting in a wholesale order for them, but I can't really justify the expence unless I either start selling them or have people who are interested in going in on the expence.

--Have a half-completed EL wire whachamacallit in the form of a travelling "ocean" wave. I made a template to attach sequenced waves and this idea worked very well. What I'd like to find is a source for line-drawings or templates of fish, boats, etc that I could use to "trace" with EL, to complete the picture, so to speak. Any pointers, links, etc appreciated.

Burning Solstinox: Connections – March 5, 2005

Friends of Curtis Present:
Burning Solstinox: Connections –March 5, 2005 8PM-4AM @ SOMArts, 934 Brannan St in SF
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once a year, on the midpoint between burns when we are farthest in time from any, we come together to celebrate Burning Solstinox - a holiday of hope, rebirth, love and the creative thrill of radical participation, when we experience playa joys in default. This year ’s theme is “Connections ”, and we invite you to create some by making magic with us in an amazing space. Don ’t miss this one; we ’ll be halfway home!

We do this all volunteer, totally non-commercial, and following the 10 Burning Man principles, so radically include yourself and participate. Help create an outrageous evening in a burning village that will keep that rocking playa vibe alive for another six months - there ’s no better way to switch your psyche from its vault of dusty memories to new visions of chaos.

This year ’s event is a FUNraiser benefit for Friends of Curtis, and we ’ve lined up the area ’s best DJ ’s, dazzling lighting, insane lasers, eye-popping visuals, blacklit bars, super cozy chill spaces, and lots of special playa style amusements sure to please all your senses. Plus, a raffle & silent auction for one-of-a-kind burner gifts and experiences, and even free coffee when it ’s time to go! Every bit of it gifted, by burners for burners. All proceeds go directly to saving this burning musician ’s life and voice from cancer (www.friendsofcurtis.com).

$15.93 presale, $20 at the door. There ’s no ATM; bring extra cash for amusements, bar & raffle.

For advance tix and info, visit http://www.solstinox.com

Because some nights are so special they only come once a year …

and ELECKTRA is celebrating her 35th birthday there!!!!!!!!

i'm helping out with an event next friday, the 18th, at studio z in san francisco, called "the black light ball". as the title may have led on, this will be a big black light event. it's a fundraiser for a neato burning man camp that makes gigantic interactive black light puppets. take a peek here:

www.imaginaryartstudios.com/mysdom.html

neat, eh? so anyways.. we're looking for some black light poi/staff/dance/whatevs performances for the night of.

we're also looking for puppet operators, stage monitors, clean-up and set up crews, and any other kind of performer.

let me know asap if you'd be into it.. all performers and event staff get in for freesies.

private message me asap if you're interested!
