Sourcing Mini Blacklights

Hi kids. Trying to find a good source for smallish 12 volt blacklight tubes for the inside of her mouth:

Point me to a website? Thanks!

Do yo wnat tubes or LED's?
LED"s are widely available, can be powered by whatever you want.
I got some from Xocide,e bay has some too.

Watch yourself with the UV LEDs though, I played with mine for most of a day before I found the warnings against looking directly at the output.

I was lucky I was mostly seeing the reflected light, I just came away with hurting eyes and a splitting headache, terms like 'retinal scarring' didn't come up.

        Good post Will!

Pay attention to the actual wavelength produced by the LEDs as well. Most common ones stay in the safe wavelengths (so much so they are sometimes ineffective at illuminating reds and oranges, but do fairly well on yellows, blues and greens). Some of them dip so deep into the UV spectrum they are very dangerous to not only the eyes, but even skin etc. with long term exposure, just like the sun or sun lamps. The real problem lies in the fact that the light output is very bright and damaging, but since our eyes don't 'see' it, it doesn't make us look away, or make our pupils constrict, from the pain of staring into a bright light.

I got those 12 volt black light tubes designed for cars yesterday. They were kind of dim but not bad. After I bypassed the fuse I somehow fried the inverter. Chalk it up to another $12 lesson. I wanted to play with the LED's anyway.

The reading I have done suggests that keeping the wavelength around 395 nm should excite the pinks and purples best. Any additional advice out there regarding best wavelength to color match?

www.BestHongKong.com is a good supplier I have purchased from before. Just search for "UV".

It's not a mini blacklight, but if you want to go with a standard 48" tube and possibly the most UV light possible from 12 volts, try one of these:

            store.solar-electric.com/tl-151.html

Mine have survived 6 years of playa abuse and work great. Draws about 1.4 amps per hour, so these puppies can run for days on a deep cycle batt. I like to bring a standard white bulb as well for lighting up my camp when bright lighting is needed.

A fluorescent light will not light-up if the polarity is reversed. Check it out on the one you
            have.

Covering glass tubes in clear packing tape can save your ass from a major moop problem if one should break.
